What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction/removal is a procedure done under local anesthesia. There are different reasons why a tooth might be extracted.
If you are receiving chemotherapy or are having an organ transplant, even the risk of infection in a particular tooth may be reason enough to pull out the tooth. This is because your immune system is unfortunately compromised.
In case of tooth damage, bacteria are more likely to enter the pulp, (the center of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels), causing more damage. This can be corrected by the root canal procedure. However, if the infection is too severe, the tooth has to be removed.

Teeth removal can also be done for orthodontia. The goal here is to help in aligning crooked teeth.

What is the procedure for a tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction can be in either of these procedures depending on whether your tooth is visible or impacted.
This involves removing teeth or a tooth that is visible in the mouth. This procedure is often done through the numbing of the gum with anesthesia so as to reduce the pain that might be felt by the patient.

This involves the removal of teeth that are not easily accessible inside the mouth. One of the reasons why this would happen would be, either the tooth has not erupted through the gum, or the tooth has been fractured below the gum line.

In this case, an incision is made into the tissues connecting the tooth to get access to it. Unlike simple extraction, surgical dental extraction is more involving.

Most times, the tooth may need to be fragmented into several pieces to allow it to be removed.
